Lamanai Maya Temples & New Safari

This is a premier opportunity to experience the best of Belize's attractions including Maya history, colonial history, flora and fauna, rivers and waterways. Enjoy a scenic and informative ride with your guide via the Northern Highway en route to Lamanai Landings. Upon arrival light refreshments are provided before boarding your riverboat and the start of a sightseeing cruise on the New River. While traversing the many little creeks and lagoons, it is easy to encounter wading birds (hawks, kites, falcons, egrets, herons) as well as an encounter with spider monkeys. You may also see dainty Jacanas (a.k.a. jesus christ birds) lightly walking on the lily pads while sleeping crocodiles bask in the morning sunlight. At the entrance to the New River Lagoon, the temples of Lamanai (Maya for "Submerged Crocodile")rise into view. After boat disembarkation and restroom break your group meets at the site Museum for a historical presentation and opportunity to view some of the original artifacts discovered at Lamanai. Next is the start of your archeological walk that takes you back over a thousand years in time as you visit the most important plazas and temples including the Mask Temple which depicts Maya ruler Lord Smoking Shell. You will also visit the Jaguar Temple, the High Temple and the Ballcourt where the Maya played their famous ballgame. Be One with the Maya amid the chatter of birdlife and the haunting call of the Howler Monkeys. Your guide will also point out various trees and plants (Copal, Ramon, Cotton, Allspice) which played a major role, both medicinally and as a food source, to the Maya in ancient times.
